Geek Out!

January 16th, 2009 (08:52 am)

OMG, Battlestar Gallactica starts up again today! I'm so behind! How did I let this happen? How did I become someone who even procrastinates watching the shows she's obsessed with??? Seriously, a low point.

Anyway, I'm excited. Kara Thrace is my all-time girl crush and that's just in addition to the many, many hot boys I enjoy drooling over in their flight suits. The only thing that could make it better would be if I ever got a slashy vibe from, say, Lee Adama and Karl Agathon. Or Anders and ANYONE. Even Baltar! Sadly, there is no obvious slash potential, at least not to me. I'm willing to be proven wrong, though, if anyone wants to point me towards a stellar BSG slash fic community....

Oy vey

December 16th, 2008 (09:02 am)

There's quite the contentious thread going on today over at Dear Author, based on a post about Running Press pubbing m/m romance by women, for women, in print and getting B&N to shelve it in the romance section. The discussion mostly devolved into a slightly aggressive back and forth over why f/f romance is so impossible to find, and whose fault that is. A little off the main topic, which is, to me, mostly just really good news. I heard they're even going to pay advances! Just another indicator that there's a serious readership out there, clamoring for more books.

(no subject)

December 15th, 2008 (11:28 am)

Finally back from Madison, GA, the home of L'Agent Extraordinaire, where we played with boylove scenes, talked smut, drank oodles of wine, and pretended to plan marketing strategies for The Book. A fabulous time was had by all! Not so very much work was done on the current WIP, however. Which turns out to be a big problem, because the proposal I thought was due tomorrow? Is totally due today. Keeping in mind that the Editrix has taken a month and a half to get to my previous edits, I'm thinking that maybe it will be okay if I lag by a day or two with the first three chapters and synopsis of Book Two. But really, I should get my ass of LJ and back to Scrivener. Which I'm totally enjoying, btw, as a writing device/program that cons me into wanting to write because it's so cute and has all these neato features.

Here's my question of the day: Has anyone ever seen General Hospital fic floating around anywhere? You can NOT tell me that some rabid fangirl out there hasn't slashed Jason and Sonny. Or, these days, more like Jason and Spinelli. I think a Google search might be in order...

Even Better the Second Time (Or the Fifth)

November 20th, 2008 (10:03 am)

I just spent the morning rereading [info]fabularasa's delicious, wonderful Snape/Black stories over again for the I-don't-know-how-manyeth time. They're so good. Honestly, when I'm reading Cordelictus or Rat's Alley, I start to feel like SS/SB is really my Snape OTP. I've read just about every combination of Snape slash, from pairings with Dumbledore (ick) and Hagrid (double ick) to Lucius (so dark and dirty) and Harry (often even darker and dirtier). I do love Snarry, and there are some indisputably great writers who play in that world, but for me, there's really something about the meeting of equals that occurs between Severus Snape and Sirius Black. The chemistry between them is of the charts, what with their history of vicious animosity. And, of course, the snarky banter doesn't hurt. If you somehow haven't read any SS/SB, give it a try. Fabula's stories are archived at the Restricted Section. Well worth a read.

New Ebook Author

November 19th, 2008 (10:32 am)

Just read a couple of pieces by a new-to-me ebook author: Pepper Espinoza. First of all, great name. Srsly. And secondly, great writing--the characters are nuanced and interesting, especially in the short (too short, I wanted more!) If All the Sand Were Pearl. Essentially a forced bonding story in a fantasy setting, IAtSWP lets us in on the 24 hours in which Brace, a lonely, wealthy horse trainer has to convince Jag, an aspiring priest, to follow through with their marriage of convenience. Not a super fresh plot, but the characters and the writing sucked me right in. And, of course, the sex was hot like burning. So yeah. I rec Pepper and want to read anything else she's written.

I Should Be Writing

November 12th, 2008 (09:07 am)

Honestly, that could be the title of most of my posts. I should always be writing, not reading fic. But fic is so tempting!  Here's what I've been enjoying, when I ought to be doing my proposal for my next book:

Original fic:
Switched by Sean Michaels, Torquere Press

That's the most recent thing, but I've just spent two days reccing specific past faves to friends who are just getting their feet wet with the whole man-on-man thing, so here are some authors (in no particular order) I've consistently loved and reread, whose books are available online:

Evangeline Anderson
Mya
Cameron Dane
Jet Mykles
Katrina Strauss
Emily Veinglory
J.L. Langley
Ally Blue (inconsistently--some books I've adored, others meh)

Fanfic:
Mostly, I've been all over the new J2 recs provided by [info]lexzilla . Lots of good stuff over there, especially if you like Jared/Jensen AU. Which I do, because I get tired of tv stardom and Vancouver and Impala!sex. Not that those things can't work, but after a while, I like to picture Jensen as a veterinarian and Jared as a dogwalker. Or whatever. I do sort of want to take those writers aside, though, and let them know that they could be making actual money off those stories, if they'd just change the character names.

Brand new me

I've been needing an LJ facelift for a while. This might be a stopgap measure, but for now, I'm going with it. This is my place to talk about boylove, read about boylove, rec boylove, and comment on boylove.

Favorite fandoms:
Harry Potter - Harry/Draco were my gateway OTP, but I soon branched out into pretty much every other possible slash coupling, excluding anything involving Percy Weasley.
Buffy - Specifically, Spike/Xander, which is weird since I ended up hating Xander by the end of the series. That was my first lesson in the way that fanon can totally trump canon, in a really good way.
Supernatural - Especially RPS. I know, it's sick. But tell me Jared and Jensen aren't the hottest, cutest thing on the planet and I'll call you a liar.
PotC - Sparrington all the way, baby. I mean, I'll read a good Jack/Will fic every now and again, but for me, it's all about James.
Torchwood - As you might have guessed by my avatar. Captain Jack and Ianto Jones. Sigh.  Why oh why is Russell Davies tormenting me with this strange notseason they're having this year??

Those are the most frequent offenders. I've also been known to dabble in X Files, SGA, Smallville--and I adore original fic. I think I'm single handedly keeping Torquere Press in business. Actually, evidently that's not the case. My insider friends at Ellora's Cave, another big epub, say that m/m romances are the biggest sellers right now. Yay! Spread the word! BOYLOVE IS EVERYWHERE!
